'Another View' Opens the Creative Worlds of 20 Contemporary Black Artists

Leading art publisher Phaidon will release Another View: The Vibrant World of Contemporary Black Artists on October 28, offering an in-depth look at the working environments and ideas of 20 influential artists.

Spanning nearly 200 pages, the volume explores how individual creative spaces shape artistic processes. From carefully structured practices to more experimental, evolving approaches, the book presents studios as places where research, memory, materials, and imagination meet.

A broad view of contemporary practice

The publication brings together profiles and exclusive conversations with major figures including Nick Cave, Nina Chanel Abney, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Kerry James Marshall, Theaster Gates, Derrick Adams, and Mickalene Thomas.

Its introduction is written by cultural critic, filmmaker, and scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr., who places the featured artists within the wider history and continuing momentum of Black contemporary art in the United States.

Rather than focusing solely on finished works, Another View highlights the thinking, experimentation, and daily rhythms behind creative production. The book offers readers a more personal perspective on the methods that sustain some of today's most significant artistic voices.

By documenting artistic practice alongside cultural context, the publication may help expand how future audiences understand the studio--not simply as a workplace, but as a vital space for new ideas and cultural dialogue.
