Hong Kong's Tai Kwun Contemporary is preparing to host a major new chapter in the practice of German artist Anne Imhof. Opening next month, the exhibition House of Swans will present her first solo show in Asia and introduce a suite of newly commissioned works across three floors of the JC Contemporary and F Hall galleries.
A multisensory exhibition
Curated by Ying Kwok and Tiffany Leung, the project combines oil painting, bronze sculpture, sound, live performance and moving image into one immersive environment. Tai Kwun describes the exhibition as a layered encounter with themes of bodily presence, structure and authority, shaped through atmospheric scenography and large-scale installations.
The opening program will include performances by Imhof's collaborators and the Hong Kong Ballet on September 25 and 26, with additional performances scheduled throughout the exhibition run. The show also expands on ideas first explored in DOOM, Imhof's earlier performance work presented in New York, while developing a new narrative around the title character and her world.
Among the new works are an untitled bronze relief from 2025 and Citizen, a 2025 video work that adds another dimension to Imhof's evolving visual language. The exhibition also continues her interest in ballet as a classical form that can be reimagined through contemporary storytelling and performance.
Imhof first gained wide international recognition at the 2017 Venice Biennale, where her work Faust earned the Golden Lion for best national pavilion. Since then, she has presented major projects at leading institutions across Europe, North America and Asia, building a career defined by bold, cross-disciplinary stagecraft.
House of Swans points to a future where contemporary art increasingly blends movement, music and installation into experiences that feel both theatrical and deeply immersive.
