Gone are the days of manually opening apps and searching for playback functions; the new Now Playing media switcher simplifies the process.
Improved Media Switching Experience
The redesigned feature is currently available to users in the Android 17 QPR Beta 3, with a stable release anticipated in the coming months. While this isn't entirely a novel concept--Android 16 users could swipe on the Now Playing panel to access recently used media--it often proved cumbersome and unreliable. The previous interface lacked clarity and was prone to bugs, making it less user-friendly.
With the new update, users will see two tiles adjacent to the Now Playing bar in the Notifications shade, showcasing the source, title, background image, and last listening position for each media app. Tapping on a tile activates the Play button, allowing for seamless switching. Additionally, this functionality extends to the lock screen, enabling users to change audio sources without unlocking their devices.
Although only two tiles are visible at a time, the feature accommodates up to four recent audio sources, with the option to swipe for additional options. However, displaying multiple sources does reduce the size of the playback tile, which can truncate titles, particularly from platforms like YouTube. Despite this minor drawback, the overall functionality and convenience of the new switcher enhance the user experience significantly.
