Ancient City of Mohenjo-Daro: A Model of Prosperity Without Wealth Disparity

Mohenjo-Daro, an archaeological marvel situated in Pakistan's Sindh province, stands as a testament to the potential of urban life without the pitfalls of inequality. Dating back to around 2500 BCE, this ancient city is part of the Indus Valley Civilization and offers a striking contrast to modern urban centers that often amplify wealth disparities.

In today's world, urban areas frequently become enclaves for the affluent, with soaring real estate prices pushing out the less fortunate. Despite this, cities continue to attract people from all walks of life due to the myriad opportunities they offer. However, new archaeological insights from Mohenjo-Daro suggest that it was possible to cultivate urban prosperity without exacerbating inequality.

Recent research published in Antiquity reveals that Mohenjo-Daro maintained a low level of inequality, which even decreased as the city thrived. This groundbreaking study is part of the GINI Project, which leverages archaeological data to understand long-term trends in inequality.

Measuring Ancient Equality

As part of the GINI Project, researchers examined 309 excavated houses in Mohenjo-Daro, comparing them to data from over 50,000 residences globally. They applied the Gini coefficient--a statistical measure of income or wealth distribution--to assess the city's economic landscape. Findings indicate that Mohenjo-Daro's Gini coefficient was approximately 0.44, significantly lower than that of other ancient cities like Knossos in Greece, which had a coefficient of 0.86.

A City of Equal Opportunity

The homes within Mohenjo-Daro were impressive, featuring multiple stories and private bathing facilities, comparable to the grand structures of Egypt and Mesopotamia. The egalitarian nature of the city is underscored by the fact that as the city evolved, the Gini coefficient dropped further, reaching 0.23 in its later phases--akin to the earliest farming communities.

Research indicates that this decline in inequality was likely the result of intentional governance strategies. Evidence suggests that the city had standardized building practices and communal decision-making structures that promoted equitable resource distribution.

Building a Fairer Society

The correlation between reduced inequality and increased median house size points to a thriving society where public goods were prioritized. As resources were shared more equitably, the overall productivity of the community increased, leading to a prosperous urban environment.

Ultimately, Mohenjo-Daro exemplifies how an ancient civilization successfully balanced urban development with social equity. This model offers valuable lessons for modern cities grappling with inequality, suggesting that thoughtful governance and community-driven policies can foster a fairer society.

As we look to the future, the insights gained from Mohenjo-Daro may inspire contemporary urban planners and policymakers to create more inclusive environments that prioritize the well-being of all citizens.
