Amazon's satellite push raises the stakes in mobile connectivity

Amazon is preparing a 5,105-satellite mobile network that could expand space-based connectivity and intensify competition with SpaceX in the next phase of telecom innovation.

Amazon's satellite push raises the stakes in mobile connectivity

Amazon has taken a major step toward expanding its space-based communications strategy by applying to the Federal Communications Commission for permission to operate a new constellation of 5,105 satellites designed to serve mobile phones. The company aims to begin launches in 2028.

The filing follows Amazon's recent acquisition of Globalstar's satellite operations, a move that gives the company access to radio spectrum already used for emergency connectivity on Apple iPhones and Internet of Things devices. Amazon plans to combine that spectrum with its Leo broadband satellite network to broaden its services.

The initiative places Amazon in closer competition with SpaceX, which has become a leading force in both satellite internet and satellite-to-phone connectivity. SpaceX is also expanding its own mobile constellation through a major spectrum deal with Echostar.

For now, the market for satellite-to-mobile service remains narrow, with most current offerings focused on text messaging and emergency use. Still, Amazon's deep financial resources and growing satellite ambitions suggest it can continue building at scale, even as launch timelines depend on the progress of its space partners.

As satellite networks mature, they could help shape a more connected future where mobile coverage reaches farther beyond traditional infrastructure.
