Speaking about the company's sustainability strategy, Amazon's chief sustainability officer Kara Hurst said the transition requires continued innovation across operations, energy systems and global supply chains. The company's scale spans logistics, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, aviation, construction and agriculture, making emissions reduction a cross-industry challenge.
Clean energy remains central to the strategy
Amazon says it has become one of the world's largest corporate buyers of clean energy, with a portfolio totaling 42 gigawatts. These investments are designed to support lower-carbon electricity use across its facilities, data centers and operations.
The company is also working to reduce its carbon intensity, measuring emissions relative to business growth. However, Amazon emphasizes that progress toward its long-term target will depend not only on its own initiatives, but also on advances among suppliers, utilities, technology providers and public institutions.
As demand for digital services and AI infrastructure accelerates, the company faces a complex balancing act: expanding capacity while scaling renewable power, energy efficiency and new climate technologies. Amazon maintains that its Climate Pledge commitment remains unchanged.
The company's approach reflects a broader shift in corporate sustainability, where ambitious targets increasingly require collaboration across entire value chains rather than isolated operational changes.
