Amazon is broadening the reach of its innovative program, Shop Direct, allowing U.S. customers to discover and purchase products from retailers not available on its platform. This exciting development was announced by the retail giant on Wednesday, signaling a new era in online shopping.
The latest upgrade introduces support for third-party product feeds, which enable merchants to share real-time information about their inventory, pricing, and catalogs with Amazon. This enhancement allows customers to be directed to a merchant's website through Amazon's search results or via its AI shopping assistant, Rufus, facilitating an even more seamless shopping experience.
Amazon has integrated third-party product feeds from notable providers like Feedonomics, Salsify, and CEDCommerce, ensuring that merchants' inventory and product details are readily accessible. The company plans to incorporate additional feed providers in the future and is set to launch a merchant portal that will allow for direct feeds from merchants.
Initially tested in February 2025, the program links customers directly to retailers' websites when their desired products are not found within Amazon's own offerings. This feature ensures that customers are aware they are navigating away from Amazon's site, providing clarity during their shopping journey.
The initiative is designed to enhance brand visibility and potentially increase sales for participating merchants. Moreover, it grants Amazon valuable insights into consumer preferences regarding brands, products, and pricing, which can be leveraged to refine its own offerings and business strategies.
Additionally, Amazon's Buy for Me feature, which utilizes AI to complete purchases on third-party sites, is now operational. This AI agent manages the entire checkout process, requiring customers only to confirm their order details before finalizing the transaction.
Customers can conveniently track their orders through the "Your Orders" tab on Amazon, as well as a dedicated "Buy for Me Orders" section, ensuring a cohesive tracking experience across platforms.
Shop Direct is currently available for U.S. customers on Amazon.com, within the Amazon mobile app, and through the Rufus AI assistant, marking a significant step towards an integrated shopping future.
This development not only enhances the shopping experience but also positions Amazon as a pivotal starting point for product searches, shaping the future of online retail.
