AltStore PAL, a revolutionary alternative app store for iOS, is making waves by integrating with the fediverse, a decentralized social network, thanks to new regulations in regions like the EU and Japan. The company recently announced its support for the open social web, which operates on ActivityPub and includes popular platforms such as Mastodon and Threads.
This initiative allows users to join independent servers that can communicate with one another, facilitating interaction across various social platforms. By launching its own Mastodon server, AltStore PAL becomes the first federated app marketplace, enhancing connectivity and user engagement.
With this new server, app developers can share updates and news about their applications directly with users. Since these communications are federated, they can be viewed and interacted with by users on different platforms, including Mastodon and Instagram's Threads, provided they have linked their accounts.
"If you have a Mastodon or Threads account, you can follow our Mastodon server and receive updates about app changes directly in your timeline," explained Riley Testut, co-founder of AltStore PAL, during a previous announcement about the company's $6 million Series A funding.
Furthermore, interactions on these posts will also be visible within the AltStore PAL app, enabling users to log in with their Mastodon or Bluesky accounts to engage with updates and alerts in the app marketplace.
At launch, several apps are already participating, including Loops, a federated short-form video platform, PeerTube, a decentralized video-sharing app, and iPhanpy, a Mastodon client developed by indie creator Matt Fantinel. More significant applications are expected to join the federated marketplace once adjustments to Apple's commission structure are finalized in the EU.
To access AltStore PAL's Mastodon server, users can visit fosstodon.org/@altstore. Additionally, the AltStore PAL app has been refreshed with a new iOS 26 Liquid Glass design and icon, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.
This integration not only enriches the user experience but also sets a precedent for how app marketplaces can evolve in a decentralized digital landscape, potentially reshaping the future of app distribution and community interaction.
