All You Need to Know About Apple's Anticipated Folding iPhone and iPad

Discover the latest insights into Apple's forthcoming foldable iPhone and iPad, including design features, expected release dates, and pricing details.

All You Need to Know About Apple's Anticipated Folding iPhone and iPad

With Apple's recent introduction of OLED technology in the latest iPad Pro, the company appears to be setting its sights on foldable devices. The most exciting development is the rumored foldable iPhone, which was first highlighted by a report in 2024, indicating that Apple aims to launch this innovative device by 2026. Additionally, industry insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has indicated that Apple is also developing a foldable iPad, initially expected to debut by 2028.

The Design, Release Timeline, and Pricing of the Foldable iPhone

When discussions about the iPhone Fold (the official name is yet to be confirmed) began, reports suggested it would feature a larger display than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Speculations have emerged about its design resembling two iPhone Airs placed side by side. Recent insights have provided clearer details, including potential pricing.

A recent post from a reliable leaker on social media revealed significant design elements of the iPhone Fold. This leaker has a solid track record, having accurately predicted features of previous iPhone models. According to the post, the iPhone Fold is expected to showcase an "elegant internal stacking structure" and will be designed to "impress the industry" with its slim profile. Notably, all control buttons will be relocated to the right side of the device, which will also house the motherboard. This means the volume buttons will be positioned at the top-right, while the power and camera buttons will be on the right side.

For those who find the iPhone's current Dynamic Island feature cumbersome, the leaks suggest a shift to a smaller pinhole design for the selfie camera, akin to many Android devices.

While internal specifications remain somewhat uncertain, another leaker has suggested that the iPhone Fold could include a 5,500 mAh battery, which would be a notable increase compared to previous iPhone models, indicating that Apple is optimizing the device's internal space.

As for the display, the latest leaks indicate that the iPhone Fold will have an outer display measuring 5.38 inches and an inner display at 7.58 inches. This inner screen will be slightly larger than the 6.9-inch display of the iPhone 17 Pro Max, although the foldable design may enhance its usability. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 features an 8-inch screen.

Analysts have expressed concerns that Apple may not meet its 2026 launch target. Ming-Chi Kuo noted that while the device could be announced in 2026, widespread availability might be delayed until 2027.

When it finally arrives, the iPhone Fold is estimated to be priced between $2,100 and $2,500, based on recent leaks.

The Potential for an iPhone Flip

Even if the iPhone Fold faces delays, its release seems likely. However, the future of a clamshell-style iPhone Flip remains uncertain. According to Mark Gurman's newsletter, Apple is exploring the possibility of a smaller foldable device similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip or Motorola Razr, which are compact phones that fold vertically.

Gurman emphasizes that while this product is not guaranteed to launch, Apple is optimistic that the foldable iPhone will generate sufficient demand for additional models in various shapes and sizes.

Delay in the Foldable iPad's Development

In related news, Gurman has shared less favorable updates for iPad enthusiasts. The anticipated foldable iPad, which was expected to feature an 18.8-inch display, has encountered developmental challenges and is now projected for a 2029 release instead of 2028.

Despite the design remaining unchanged, Apple is facing engineering hurdles related to the device's weight and display technology. Fortunately, this delay does not seem to be linked to supply chain issues, and the projected pricing remains around $3,000.
