Alexa+ Now Available to All U.S. Customers

Amazon has officially launched Alexa+, an enhanced version of its popular AI assistant, making it accessible to all customers in the United States. This upgrade, which integrates generative AI capabilities, is available for free to Prime members across various devices. For those who are not Prime members, Alexa+ can still be accessed without charge through the Alexa website or mobile app, albeit with some limitations.

Daniel Rausch, Amazon's VP of Alexa and Echo, emphasized the significant user base, stating, "We have tens of millions of customers using Alexa+ now, and we're excited to extend this to all Prime members, providing unlimited access as part of their membership."

Initially announced last year, Alexa+ operates on a mix of Amazon's own foundational models and those from external partners, enabling it to perform a wider array of tasks compared to its predecessor. This includes engaging in natural conversations with follow-up questions and interactive dialogues.

Beyond its traditional functions of managing smart home devices and providing updates on news and weather, Alexa+ can assist users with planning trips, managing shared calendars, discovering recipes, recommending movies, and even facilitating homework help. The assistant's capabilities are further enhanced by integrations with popular services like Ticketmaster, Uber, and OpenTable, allowing for more complex tasks such as booking dinner reservations.

During its beta phase, Alexa+ received valuable feedback, prompting Amazon to refine the user experience. Adjustments included improving the onboarding process and enhancing the assistant's responsiveness to minimize unwanted interruptions. Users can also customize their interaction preferences, including the option to disable follow-on listening.

Overall, the response to Alexa+ has been positive, with increased engagement noted among users. Music streaming has risen by 25% since the upgrade, and users are engaging more deeply with features like recipe management, which has seen a fivefold increase in activity.

While Alexa+ is free for Prime members, non-Prime users can subscribe for $19.99 per month, a competitive rate compared to other AI services. The free version available on web and mobile will have certain limits to prevent misuse.

Alexa+ is compatible with a variety of devices, including Echo products, Fire TV, and Alexa-enabled devices from partners like Samsung and Bose, with more integrations expected in the future.
