Aivazovsky's 'The Ninth Wave' Returns After Major Restoration in Saint Petersburg

The State Russian Museum has completed the restoration of Ivan Aivazovsky's celebrated 1850 seascape, The Ninth Wave, ahead of a major retrospective opening on October 16 in Saint Petersburg.

Conservation work began in June and marks the most extensive intervention on the painting since it entered the museum's collection 120 years ago. The work will be displayed in the museum's Benois Wing as part of an exhibition bringing together more than 200 works by Aivazovsky.

A renewed landmark of marine painting

Known for its dramatic portrayal of survivors at sea after a storm, The Ninth Wave captures a moment where sunlight breaks through turbulent skies. Its title refers to a maritime belief that the ninth wave in a sequence is the largest and most powerful.

Museum specialists stabilized areas where the paint layer had begun to lift, renewed the canvas surface with carefully matched primer and pigments, and applied a final protective varnish. The painting's linden-wood frame also received detailed attention, with more than 100 missing elements recreated and finished with gold leaf.

The retrospective will place the restored work alongside paintings including The Creation of the World and The Flood, offering visitors a broad view of Aivazovsky's atmospheric approach to light, water and movement.

The restoration demonstrates how scientific conservation can help cultural institutions preserve landmark artworks for future generations while keeping their emotional power alive.
