Innovator Drew Perkins, a veteran in computer networking since the internet's inception, has launched his latest venture, Eridu, an AI networking startup that has officially emerged from stealth mode. The company has successfully secured a remarkable $200 million in an oversubscribed Series A funding round, led by notable investors including Socratic Partners and John Doerr.
With this new round, Eridu's total funding has reached $230 million. Perkins, who has a rich history in the tech industry, previously co-founded Lightera Networks, which was sold for over $500 million, and Infinera, which went public before being acquired by Nokia for $2.3 billion.
Inspired by a conversation with OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman about the massive computational power behind AI advancements, Perkins recognized a critical bottleneck in the networking sector. He realized that enhancing the communication methods between chips is essential for future progress.
Teaming up with co-founder Omar Hassen, a specialist in networking chip design, they founded Eridu in 2024 with a mission to revolutionize computer networking. Their approach begins with designing new chips that incorporate advanced networking functionalities tailored for AI applications.
Eridu plans to create comprehensive systems that will replace traditional networking gear in AI data centers, streamlining operations by minimizing the need for multiple optical connections and reducing latency. This innovative switch will enhance reliability and efficiency by integrating more functionalities directly onto the chips.
Perkins noted that while GPU performance is improving rapidly, traditional data center switches have lagged behind, creating an opportunity for Eridu to fill this gap. Their unique proposition has attracted significant interest from venture capitalists, with Perkins reporting an overwhelming response during their fundraising efforts.
Though Perkins refrained from disclosing the startup's valuation, he emphasized the importance of ensuring that his team of around 100 employees benefits from their stock options. As Eridu positions itself to deliver a groundbreaking AI-friendly networking solution, it stands to play a pivotal role in the largest data center expansion in history.
With a team seasoned in the tech landscape, Eridu is well-equipped to capitalize on this opportunity, potentially reshaping the future of networking technology.
