Artificial intelligence is entering a new phase, and the spotlight is shifting from model building to real-world implementation. A study by executive search firm Christian & Timbers estimates that only about 2,000 engineers in the U.S. combine sector expertise, executive-level credibility, and hands-on applied AI experience at the level enterprises need to generate measurable returns.
These specialists are known as forward-deployed engineers (FDEs): professionals who work directly inside client organizations to adapt, deploy, and integrate AI systems into daily operations. As companies move beyond experimentation and focus on workflow impact, demand for this role is accelerating quickly.
The study, based on interviews with more than 250 senior hiring leaders across 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and conversations with over 300 FDEs and applied AI engineers, projects demand for these experts to rise sharply by the end of the year. At the start of the year, only a small share of companies planned to hire FDEs. By the second quarter, that figure had climbed dramatically, with major consulting and services firms now building much larger teams.
The report also suggests that the U.S. market has around 17,000 FDEs overall, though only a smaller group is considered elite enough to deliver major business value. In practice, that value may come from faster revenue generation, smarter automation, or more efficient internal processes.
Industry leaders say the role is becoming central to enterprise AI strategy. Some companies are even creating internal FDE teams to keep proprietary knowledge close and strengthen their own technical capabilities. Meanwhile, major AI firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic are expanding enterprise-focused services built around deployment expertise.
Looking ahead, the role may evolve again as companies begin applying AI to robotics and other physical systems. For now, FDEs represent one of the clearest signs that the AI market is moving from promise to practical value, shaping how businesses may adopt intelligent systems in the years ahead.
