Former Google security leaders Cy Khormaee and Ryan Luo have secured $36 million in Series A funding for AegisAI, a startup built to counter the rise of AI-driven spear phishing. The round was led by Battery Ventures, with support from Accel and Foundation Capital, bringing the company's total funding to $49 million.
Launched less than a year ago, AegisAI uses AI agents to examine incoming emails with a more adaptive approach than traditional rule-based filters. Instead of relying only on fixed patterns, the system evaluates context, subtle inconsistencies, and suspicious attachments in a way designed to catch highly personalized fraud attempts.
The company says its technology is already being used by dozens of customers, including Mash, LangChain, and Lokker. Its focus is especially relevant as attackers increasingly use AI to tailor messages that appear credible by referencing coworkers, projects, or travel details.
Khormaee and Luo, who previously worked on safe browsing and reCAPTCHA at Google, are now extending that expertise into a new layer of digital protection. AegisAI's long-term vision goes beyond email, with plans to expand into broader data security applications.
As AI reshapes both offense and defense in cybersecurity, tools that can analyze threats in real time may become a defining layer of future digital trust.
