2026 James Beard America's Classics Award Winners Announced

The annual celebration of culinary excellence is upon us as the James Beard Awards season kicks off. Following the announcement of this year's semifinalists, the James Beard Foundation has revealed the winners of the prestigious America's Classics awards. Established in 1998, this category honors independently owned restaurants that have become cherished staples in their communities, showcasing food that embodies local culture and traditions. Here are the six distinguished winners for this year:

The Serving Spoon, Inglewood, California

This family-run gem has been a vibrant breakfast and lunch spot for over 40 years, serving as a gathering place for the Black community in Los Angeles. Founded in 1983 by Harold E. Sparks, the restaurant is now managed by his grandchildren, continuing its legacy.

Oyster House, Philadelphia

For three generations, the Mink family has operated this Philadelphia institution, preserving the culinary heritage of the city with classic dishes like sherried snapper soup and fried oysters, reflecting the food traditions of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Johnny's Cafe, Omaha, Nebraska

In a city known for its steakhouses, Johnny's Cafe stands out. Founded by Frank Kawa over a century ago, this family-run establishment is renowned for its ribeyes and martinis, alongside unique offerings like Polish vinaigrette and a signature cottage cheese spread.

Eng's, Kingston, New York

Established in 1927 as Kingston's first Chinese restaurant by Jimmi Eng and his son Paul, Eng's has been serving beloved classics such as egg rolls and pu pu platters for over five decades under the stewardship of Tom Sit and his wife, Faye.

Figaretti's Italian Restaurant, Wheeling, West Virginia

Originating from the homemade spaghetti sauce of Sicilian immigrant Anna Figaretti, this restaurant opened in 1948 and has become a local favorite, celebrated for its pasta dishes, steaks, and homemade sausage.

Bob Taylor's Ranch House, Las Vegas

Since its inception in 1955, Bob Taylor's has remained a nostalgic landmark of Las Vegas, serving the grilled steaks and seafood that made it famous, all while preserving the charm of a bygone era.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates, as finalists for the Restaurant and Chef Awards will be unveiled on March 31, with Media Awards nominees following on May 6. The grand ceremonies for the James Beard Awards will take place from June 13 to June 15 in Chicago.
