AllTrails can do more than help you find a route. Its mapping, navigation and activity tools can also help you plan ahead and stay informed on the trail. These features can make your next outing easier to tailor to your needs.
Explore the route before setting out
Drag across the elevation profile to see where climbs, steep grades and features such as stream crossings appear on the map. Search filters can help narrow options by route type, difficulty, suitability for families or dogs, and expected visitor levels.
Learn from community activity
Public activity maps attached to trail listings may reveal variations that connect multiple paths or take a different line. Check that any route fits your abilities and follow responsible trail practices. Reviews can also offer useful details about seasonal conditions: search for terms such as "mud," "snow" or "bugs," and compare recent notes with those from the same time of year.
Make navigation more precise
Use the trail listing's directions option to access the trailhead's specific GPS coordinates in your preferred map app. While recording an activity, add waypoints to mark useful notes, such as a tricky turn. Depending on your privacy settings, these markers may also be shared with the community.
Prepare for limited signal
With an eligible subscription, download an offline map before leaving. Once mobile service becomes unreliable, airplane mode can reduce battery use while the phone's GPS continues to show your position on the downloaded map. Map layers may also provide information about conditions such as precipitation, snow depth or terrain, depending on your plan and location.
Share your plan and location
Paid plans include Live Share, which lets chosen contacts follow your location and route during an outing. You can also connect an REI membership in the app to check whether a subscription discount is available.
Used together, these tools can make outdoor planning more informed and connected, while helping hikers navigate with greater confidence.
