Apple's Spotlight search has evolved into more than a quick way to find files and apps. In macOS 26 Tahoe, it now supports a wider set of everyday actions that can help Mac users work faster and stay organized from a single search bar.
More than search
Opened with Command-Space, Spotlight can now do much more than locate documents. Users can check clipboard history, run currency and unit conversions, use a built-in calculator, and even trigger actions without opening separate apps.
Practical tools in one place
Among the most useful additions is clipboard history, which can be enabled in System Settings > Spotlight by turning on Results from Clipboard. Spotlight also supports quick conversions such as currencies, weights, and volumes, making routine tasks faster.
Search filters add another layer of precision. By using terms like /pdf or /downloads, users can narrow results to specific file types or folders. Spotlight can also open the containing folder of a result in Finder with Command-Enter.
Built-in actions and smart shortcuts
Spotlight now reaches into communication and productivity workflows as well. It can send messages, start timers, translate text, and surface hidden system settings directly from search. For frequent actions, users can assign quick keys through the actions panel opened with Command-3.
It is also possible to fine-tune results by excluding selected apps or folders in Spotlight settings, giving users a more focused search experience tailored to their workflow. As Apple continues to expand Spotlight's role, the feature is becoming a central command layer for macOS, pointing toward a more seamless and intelligent desktop future.
