10 Essential Tips for Every Steam Deck User

Explore essential tips and hacks to maximize your Steam Deck experience, from customizing settings to enhancing performance and accessing a wider range of games.

The Steam Deck, released by Valve in 2022, has transformed the landscape of PC gaming, establishing the handheld gaming PC as a popular format. As we move into 2026, its performance-to-price ratio remains impressive, especially when compared to pricier alternatives. However, out of the box, it may not be fully optimized for every user. While SteamOS provides a user-friendly experience, numerous hacks and customizations can enhance its functionality and tailor it to your preferences.

Transform Your Steam Deck into a Mini PC with Desktop Mode

Activating the desktop mode significantly expands your Steam Deck's capabilities. While the device excels at providing quick access to games via its home screen, it can also function as a more traditional desktop computer.

To switch to desktop mode, press the Steam button, select Power, and then choose Switch to Desktop.

This will lead you to a familiar PC interface, especially if you have experience with Linux, the foundation of SteamOS. Desktop mode enables you to install your favorite productivity applications or browse the web using Microsoft Edge, which is pre-installed. You can control the mouse cursor using the right trackpad, thumbsticks, or touchscreen, and connect external devices via the USB-C port. Effectively, you can convert your Steam Deck into a fully functional Mini PC, complete with its own display.

To return to the gaming interface, simply click the Return to Gaming mode icon located in the top left corner of the desktop.

Access Games Beyond Steam

By default, the Steam Deck showcases games from your Steam Library, naturally encouraging purchases from Valve's store. However, since the Steam Deck operates as a specialized mini PC, you can also play games from other platforms.

A convenient method to achieve this is by using the Heroic Launcher, which allows you to install games from the Epic Game Store, Amazon, and GOG libraries via a user-friendly interface.

To install Heroic Game Launcher, switch to desktop mode, open the Discover store (represented by a shopping bag icon), search for Heroic, and install the app. Once installed, log into your various accounts and you can begin adding games.

For seamless access from the gaming mode, you can add Heroic Launcher to your Steam library. Navigate to the Steam shortcut on your desktop, select Add a game, and then Add a Non-Steam Game. Locate Heroic Game Launcher in the list and click Add Selected Programs. This way, you can easily access Heroic Launcher and any games added to Steam from the gaming mode.

Enhance Your Experience with Plugins

While SteamOS is user-friendly, many fans have developed plugins to further personalize the experience through a tool called Decky Loader.

To install Decky Loader, enter desktop mode, open your browser, and visit decky.xyz. Download the installation file and follow the prompts. After installation, return to gaming mode and access the Decky Loader menu to explore available plugins.

From here, you can find popular plugins like CSS Loader for customizing themes and Animation Changer for altering boot animations. Simply download the plugins that interest you and manage them through the quick settings menu.

Utilize a Dock for Enhanced Functionality

Although the Steam Deck is portable, using it with a dock allows for a more traditional desktop experience. You can connect it to a larger screen, enhancing your gaming experience.

Choose a dock that includes DisplayPort or HDMI 2.1 connections for optimal performance. A dock with additional USB ports and an ethernet connection is also beneficial. Once set up, connect your Steam Deck to your display using the USB-C port and appropriate cables, allowing you to enjoy gaming on a big screen.

Effortlessly Emulate Older Games

The Steam Deck can also be used to emulate games from previous systems. The Emudeck tool simplifies the installation of various emulators on your device.

To install Emudeck, switch to desktop mode, open a browser, and visit emudeck.com. Download the installer and follow the prompts. Choose the recommended settings for an easy setup, or customize your installation through the options provided.

Control Fan Noise for a Quieter Experience

If the fan noise is bothersome, you can adjust its settings for quieter operation. Navigate to System in the settings menu and enable updated fan control for a quieter experience, though this may affect performance.

For more control, install the Fantastic plugin via Decky Loader to create a custom fan curve based on your device's temperature.

Optimize Power Settings for Better Battery Life

Not all games require maximum power, so consider adjusting your Steam Deck's performance settings to extend battery life. Access the performance menu and adjust the TDP Limit to reduce power consumption.

You can also set a Manual GPU Clock and adjust the screen's refresh rate to further enhance battery longevity.

Discover Affordable Steam Deck Options

Although the Steam Deck's base price is currently $550, Valve occasionally offers "certified refurbished" units at a lower price. Keep an eye out for these deals, as they can provide significant savings.

Participate in Steam Beta Updates

If you're eager to access new SteamOS features, consider joining the beta program. Navigate to Settings > System > Beta Participation to sign up for beta or preview channels.

Enhance Your Steam Deck's Color Settings

For a more vibrant display, you can adjust the color settings of your Steam Deck. Access this feature through Settings > Display and explore the options to modify color temperature and vibrance.
