Since stepping away from Facebook, Instagram has become my go-to social media platform for connecting with friends and sharing updates. With over 15 years of experience on the app, I've gathered some invaluable tips to optimize your Instagram journey. Here are ten hacks to enhance your privacy, streamline your feed, and improve your overall experience.
Utilize Filters to Manage Spam and Clean Your Feed
To keep your Instagram feed free from unwanted content, set up filters to block spammy comments and messages. Navigate to your profile, tap the three-line menu, and access Settings and activity. From there, select Hidden Words to add keywords you wish to block. This feature allows you to customize your experience by filtering out offensive phrases and unwanted messages.
Reset Your Instagram Algorithm
If your feed starts showing irrelevant content, you can reset your algorithm. Simply engage with content you enjoy--like cat videos--by swiping through reels. Alternatively, reset your suggested content entirely through Settings > Content preferences > Reset suggested content.
Remove Tracking Links When Sharing
When sharing links, Instagram tracks your activity. To maintain privacy, you can manually remove tracking parameters from links before sharing. Just delete everything after the question mark in the URL.
Open DM Links in Your Preferred Browser
Instagram opens links in its in-app browser, which may compromise your privacy. To change this for direct messages, go to Settings > App website permissions > Message links and enable Open in external browser.
Limit Notifications
To avoid overwhelming notifications, adjust your settings by visiting Settings > Notifications. You can choose to receive only essential alerts, such as direct messages, and disable unnecessary notifications.
Hide Your Online Status and Read Receipts
For a more discreet experience, disable the visibility of your online status by navigating to Settings > Messages and story replies > Show activity status. You can also turn off read receipts to prevent others from knowing when you've read their messages.
Disable the Typing Indicator
If the typing indicator distracts you, you can turn it off by accessing the chat, tapping the contact's name, and adjusting the Typing indicator setting under Privacy and safety.
Enable End-to-End Encryption for Chats
For enhanced security, activate end-to-end encryption for your Instagram chats. Open a chat, tap the contact's name, and select Privacy and safety > Use end-to-end encryption to keep your messages private.
Automatically Clear Your Search History
To avoid embarrassment from past searches, you can clear your history manually or set it to automatically delete after three days. Go to Settings > Accounts Center > Your information and permissions > Search history to adjust this setting.
Reset Ad Preferences to Safeguard Your Data
While you can't block ads entirely, you can limit how Instagram uses your data for advertising. Visit Settings > Accounts Center > Ad preferences to manage your information and preferences.
